Sonnets from Caviar For Breakfast
Sea Eagle
Down corridors of wind I sweep and glide.
I call in joy to the new sun's morning light.
I hear my feathers sing as I stretch them wide,
to my bellly's warmth my legs are curled up tight.
I chase and tease the gulls for well they know
in grace and strength they never compare with me;
then I steady my wings and stare hard-eyed below
at the choice of food lying close to the lips of the sea.
I dive and pluck a plump fish from its rest
and over the river again I carry it back
to carefully place it in our treetop nest
where the squeaky chicks fight for another snack.
I love the ocean smell, its wild, cold sprays.
Its colour and it moods haunt all my days.
Old Horse
I don't care if you gallop by.
I'm happy here beneath this tree
in morning sun and soft, blue sky,
old milking cows for company.
Once I would run to welcome you,
now watch you and your riders' pass.
Once I was groomed and ridden too,
now rest and roam on sweet, green grass.
I was abandoned years ago
and found this valley where with the cows,
the bull and calves I only know
contentment, love, in dappled hours.
On my back the sun and rain
lie quiet as day rides through again.
I Want to Lie
I want to lie and listen to the night,
its fading sounds of traffic from the street.
I want to feel the stars' and full moon's light
as the rush and push of waking hours retreat.
I want to lie in the bending shape of a girl
and share her dream of love she hopes to find,
her innocence shining like a newfound pearl,
my fears of growing old left far behind.
I want to listen to poems in your head,
unwritten, but to sense them form in me
and unwrap cherished words of kindness said
I keep blue-ribboned in my memory.
I want to feel your head against my chest
and cool, soft breezes sweetening us in rest.
